If the Linked Gauge (a meter-long bar filled by successful attacks) is filled appropriately, the two Linked characters combine their attacks into a special Arte called a Linked Arte. When Linked, however, it is possible to have both characters execute their individual Arte attacks simultaneously. Artes are the aforementioned special attacks that are customized to the controller’s main buttons and are executed in real-time. So on and so forth.Īnother feature returning from the original Tales of Xillia is the Linked Arte System. Linking with Jude, on the other hand, replenishes a small amount of Health each time Ludger is knocked down. Linking with Alvin, for example, grants additional damage to large enemies whose super-strong defense makes physical attacks ineffective. “Linking” grants different bonuses specific to different characters. Going even further, the player can choose any other character to “Link” with in battle. Additionally, the player can switch weapons in mid-swing, creating combos between weapons, making battles a rich, experimental experience. These strengths and weaknesses forces the player to think ahead and adapt their fighting tactics to the presented enemies. Each weapon has its strengths and weaknesses: the dual blades are quick but don’t fare well to larger enemies the sledge-hammer is the strongest weapon but has horrible speed. In battle, the player can switch between weapons by the press of a button. Ludger has three weapons to choose from: dual swords, pistols, a sledge-hammer (plus a spear exclusive to Ludger’s time-sensitive, super-strong Chromatis form). Most video game characters wield one standard weapon class: swords, spears, and the like.

Xillia 2’s second unique trait is the Weapon Shift System. – grants a reward ranging from additional skills, special attacks and titles (phrases that boost character stats like strength or speed). Friendly interaction is rated on a multi-tiered system of levels: each level reached –achieved by dialogue choices, partnership in battle, etc. This relationship development is a key aspect regarding the companions that join Ludger in battle. Xillia 2’s tagline/theme is the “Choices That Spin the Future,” which is a fancy way of saying that at certain points when silent protagonist Ludger wants to speak, the player is presented with choices the choosing of which leads to significant differences in character interaction and developing relationships between the people in the conversation. For Tales of Xillia 2, those features are the choice of dialogue, the Weapon Shift System, and the Linked Arte System.
However, video games cannot survive without evolving, so each succeeding Tales game has added their own unique layer to gameplay. For the Tales series of video games, that gimmick is the mapping of special attacks to the controller buttons (and the execution of said attacks in real time). Something that makes it stand out from the rest.
